This course aims to develop an advanced level of communication by interpreting and analyzing various aspects of modern Japanese literature, including short stories and significant works by authors of the modern period. Taught in Japanese.
My Experience:
This course serves as a preparation for Capstone. During this class, I became Capstone partners with Micaela Mussell, and we began our work on our capstone project. We also focused on research strategies and methods of determining the best research questions for our project and survey questions to ask our participants. This class involved a lot of trial and error within research and reconsidering/questioning the validity of our own research methods and the questions we formed throughout the course. This course consisted of a lot of brainstorming and identifying the best topic to investigate and the best way of researching that topic. Alongside beginning our own research, we studied good practice in research and determined what sources would be applicable to our topic. These good practices are some of my biggest takeaways from this class, as knowing how to properly research has helped me in non-Japanese classes immensely.
Without the steps completed in this class, I would not have been able to achieve a level of satisfaction with my capstone. By having a year-long capstone, it allowed us extra time to make mistakes and "go back to the drawing board", which we did many times before settling on our final research topic and questions. The culmination of my effort in this class can be viewed on th capstone project page.
