MLO Narrative:
I met the requirements for MLO 4 through multiple-research and professional development-focused classes. MLO 4.1 was achieved during my JAPN 402 and Capstone courses. By learning the proper research methodologies utilizing both English and Japanese resources, I was able to successfully complete my Capstone project. I also learned a great deal about the research process, and came to understand that backtracking and reorienting is a frequent and vital part of research. Courses that fulfilled MLO 4.2 were WLC 300 and JAPN 420. Both of these classes allowed me to observe the paths of Japanese majors that came before me and learn about the tools they used in their language learning and professional development. This also helped me learn about the kind of technology that I would employ in some of the career options available to me as a specialist in a foreign language.
MLO 4.3 was achieved in my JAPN 380 and Capstone (WLC 400) courses. These classes focused on presentational skills as well as information organization and helped me become able to synthesize information from different sources into a professional argument. In my JAPN 404 course I used tools for gathering survey data and organizing assembled information into graphs. I came to understand how these tools worked and how they needed to be adapted to each language/audience in order to maintain a unifrm tone and presentation across language barriers.
Since my capstone was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, I also needed to adapt my presentation and communication with my partner to better match the digital environment that the capstone festival would now take place in. While not limited to my capstone-related classes (JAPN 404 & WLC 400), I found that the adaptation to an online environment caused the scope of these courses to change the greatest and they now required novel approaches to fundamental methods that the courses were initially based on.
